Florida’s Department of Juvenile Justice Secretary, Eric Hall, has praised Governor Ron DeSantis for his budget focused on fiscal responsibility. The proposed budget aims to enhance public safety and maintain Florida’s status as a leader in juvenile justice systems nationwide. The budget outlines key investments intended to improve the department’s ability to hold juveniles accountable while providing services aimed at reducing recidivism, thus contributing to stronger families and safer communities across the state.

“Florida’s juvenile justice system continues to set the standard for other states thanks to the steadfast support of Governor Ron DeSantis,” said DJJ Secretary Eric Hall. “Governor DeSantis’ recommended budget will allow the department and its providers to attract and retain top talent and enhance services to meet the evolving needs of Florida’s youth and families while ensuring public safety remains at the forefront of all we do.”

Key highlights from Governor DeSantis’ budget include:

– $35.1 million allocated for increasing per diem rates for moderate risk and secure residential programs. This funding aims to keep the department competitive among private residential providers and ensure continuity in operations within the residential commitment program area.

– $20.2 million directed towards increasing moderate-risk residential beds, aligning with current utilization trends.

– $7.1 million in recurring funding dedicated to the Florida Scholars Academy, ensuring effective operations and adequate staffing necessary for educating students in residential programs.

– $10 million earmarked for fixed capital outlay projects aimed at maintaining and repairing DJJ buildings statewide, focusing on health and safety improvements such as roofing repairs, mechanical systems updates, plumbing systems maintenance, interior enhancements, site repairs, ADA assessments, along with routine or emergency maintenance needs.
