Governor Ron DeSantis has introduced the Focus on Fiscal Responsibility budget, which includes new investments aimed at strengthening public health and health care access in Florida. State Surgeon General Dr. Joseph A. Ladapo stated, “Governor DeSantis continues to prioritize the health of Floridians through Focus on Fiscal Responsibility which dedicates significant resources to advancing common-sense public health. These investments will continue to ensure Florida remains a leader in public health and health care access, fostering healthier communities statewide.”

The proposed budget allocates $35 million for cancer research and patient care. Of this amount, $30 million is designated for the creation of the Cancer Connect Collaborative Incubator, which will fund targeted cancer research initiatives with an initial focus on pediatric cancer. An additional $5 million is set aside for the Casey DeSantis Cancer Research Program.

Other funding measures include $22.4 million to support the School Health Services program, which provides nursing assessments, health counseling, referrals, and services for students aged 4-18 across Florida schools. The budget also proposes $18.1 million to modernize and enhance IT security protocols at the Florida Department of Health in order to reduce cybersecurity threats and protect sensitive statewide health data.

To improve operational efficiency and streamline public services, $11.1 million will be used to update the department’s IT systems. The Early Steps program—Florida’s early intervention initiative for infants and toddlers with developmental disabilities—will receive $8.9 million for provider recruitment and professional development.

Additionally, $2.1 million is allocated to expand routine screening for HIV, hepatitis C, and syphilis in more emergency departments throughout the state.

These investments are part of ongoing efforts by the Florida Department of Health to expand access to healthcare services through integrated state, county, and community initiatives within its nationally accredited public health system.

The department works under national accreditation from the Public Health Accreditation Board with a mission to protect, promote, and improve the health of all people in Florida through coordinated efforts at various levels.
