Governor Ron DeSantis has presented a proposal aimed at providing property tax relief to homeowners in Florida. The plan involves issuing rebate checks, averaging $1,000, to cover state-mandated school property taxes for homesteaded properties across the state. The rebates, expected to reach residents by December 2025, will aid more than 5.1 million properties and support full school district funding.

Governor DeSantis explained his motivation, stating, “Property taxes effectively require homeowners to pay rent to the government.” He emphasized that constitutional protections for homeowners would need voter approval in 2026, but stressed the immediate need for relief through his proposed plan. “If the Legislature acts on this plan now, we can get this done this year. Let’s get this done for the people of Florida this session,” he urged.

The Governor is looking to secure authorization from the Florida Legislature for the immediate issuance of these rebates, emphasizing the state’s solid revenue position as an opportunity to assist full-time residents promptly.
