The Florida Department of Education has announced that Brandy Nicole Anderson, a teacher at Indian Trails Middle School in Flagler County, is among the five finalists for the 2026 Florida Teacher of the Year award. These finalists were selected from 76 district teachers of the year. The winner will be revealed in July.

“Congratulations to Ms. Anderson for being named a 2026 Teacher of the Year Finalist,” stated Commissioner of Education Manny Diaz, Jr. “Ms. Anderson has set an incredible example for other teachers to follow and her commitment to her students is apparent.”

LaShakia Moore, Superintendent of Flagler County Schools, remarked on Anderson’s impact as a civics teacher: “As a civics teacher at Indian Trails Middle School, Brandy encourages a deep understanding of government and civic responsibility within her students, as well as a passion for critical thinking.” She added that “Brandy is a role model of integrity, resilience, and passion for education.”

Anderson teaches seventh-grade civics and holds multiple certifications including AVID Certification and the Gifted Endorsement. She also serves as the Social Studies Department Chair and assists with coaching track and field.

The selection process for this honor involved nearly 175,000 public school teachers across Florida. Each district chooses its own teacher of the year before applications are reviewed by a committee composed of educators, principals, parents, and business community members based on teaching ability and community service.

The chosen winner will act as the Christa McAuliffe Ambassador for Education throughout their tenure representing both educators and the Department of Education across Florida.

The Florida Teacher of the Year program is supported by various sponsors including Florida Prepaid College Savings Plan; Florida State University Anne Spencer Daves College of Education; Helios Education Foundation; Sunshine Health; The Florida Lottery; Florida Power & Light Company; HCA Healthcare; Herff Jones; Publix Super Markets Charities; PNC Bank; and JM Family Enterprises.
