Attorney General James Uthmeier of Florida has led a group of Attorneys General from Alaska, Georgia, Idaho, North Dakota, and South Dakota in sending a warning letter to the climate advocacy group Ceres. The coalition expressed concerns that Ceres’ coordinated actions may violate state and federal antitrust and consumer protection laws.
“Ceres—a ringleader of the ‘climate cartel’—is open about its notorious goals to achieve net-zero carbon emissions,” said Attorney General James Uthmeier. “The assault on American families and businesses through what Ceres calls a ‘Global World War’ to achieve net zero must stop. Failure to do so will result in a multi-state barrage of anti-trust enforcement.”
The letter alleges that Ceres acts as a central organizer for initiatives that pressure financial institutions and corporations to redirect investments away from certain sectors. According to the coalition, Ceres coordinates with stakeholders and shareholders of these corporations. The letter also notes an incident where Ceres participated in efforts to replace ExxonMobil’s entire board as an example intended to influence other companies.
Further, the letter points out that Ceres openly promotes strategies aimed at transforming industries, achieving systemic changes, and altering business practices. The Attorneys General argue that this coordination could amount to unlawful collusion among market participants, which is prohibited under antitrust law.
The coalition also raises concerns about potential consumer protection violations. They argue that companies refusing to comply with Ceres’ agenda might be accused of “greenwashing,” potentially misleading consumers.
Ceres has been asked by the coalition to explain how its actions do not breach antitrust or consumer protection laws and to provide supporting documentation.
