The Government Operations Subcommittee is set to review a bill on Thursday that could significantly alter Florida’s citizen-led amendment process. The proposed legislation, HB1205, aims to make it more challenging for groups of Floridians to place amendments on the ballot.
Common Cause, alongside individual Floridians and several allied organizations, plans to testify against this bill. Amy Keith, Executive Director of Common Cause Florida, emphasized the importance of citizen-led amendments in a statement: “Citizen-led amendments are one of the only ways voters have to pass policies directly, and Florida already has one of the strictest citizen-led amendment processes in the country. Restricting it further will only serve to freeze out everyday Floridians and put the desires of special interests above the will of the people. The majority of Floridians – across political parties – support our citizen-led amendment process. We need our elected leaders to stand up and protect the power of the people by rejecting any new restrictions.”
The hearing will take place at Sumner Hall in Tallahassee, with proceedings beginning at 9 a.m.
