The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) encourages the public to take part in Gopher Tortoise Day. Information about various celebrations and events can be found at GopherTortoiseDayFL.com, and participants are invited to share their experiences on social media using #GopherTortoiseDay.

To support the protection of gopher tortoises, the FWC suggests keeping these animals undisturbed if spotted. People are invited to make their surroundings more accommodating by planting suitable vegetation or designing environments catering to these animals. If a tortoise is found crossing a road safely, individuals can help guide the tortoise in the direction it was heading but should not place them in water as they cannot swim like turtles.

Sightings, or any instances of sick, injured, or deceased tortoises, should be reported to the FWC. Educational resources, including activities and materials about gopher tortoises, are available through the FWC’s Gopher Tortoise Program webpage.

It’s crucial to note the legal protection of the gopher tortoise, listed as a threatened species in Florida. The law prohibits harming or disturbing these animals, their burrows, or eggs without a permit. Violations should be reported to the FWC’s Wildlife Alert Hotline at 888-404-FWCC (3922).

The Gopher Tortoise Council introduced Gopher Tortoise Day in 2016 to foster appreciation and conservation of this species. Celebrations take place annually on April 10. With spring being an active season for gopher tortoises and other local wildlife, more information can be found at MyFWC.com/GopherTortoise.
