The Florida Legislature began its Regular Session on March 4, which will run until May 2. During this period, funding decisions for crucial initiatives like the Citrus Research and Field Trial Program, Citrus Health Response Program, the Citrus Recovery Program, and the Citrus Inspection Trust Fund will be made.

Steve Johnson, Chairman of the Florida Citrus Commission and owner of Johnson Harvesting, Inc., emphasized the ongoing efforts to combat citrus greening. “I’d be lying if I didn’t admit that this is a marathon, not a sprint,” he stated. He likened the struggle to a marathon where runners face their toughest challenges three-quarters through the race.

Johnson expressed optimism about overcoming citrus greening with continuous support from organizations such as the Florida Department of Citrus (FDOC) and Florida Citrus Mutual (FCM). He said these groups would continue advocating in the legislature with strategic marketing and scientific advancements backing their efforts.

“My encouragement to each of you is to remember how far we’ve come,” Johnson noted. He believes that with continued research and legislative support, there will be a renaissance for Florida’s citrus industry benefiting future generations.
