The Florida Division of Emergency Management (FDEM) marked its 5th Annual Emergency Management Day at the Florida Capitol. Executive Director Kevin Guthrie was joined by key figures including Education Commissioner Manny Diaz, Jr., FloridaCommerce Deputy Secretary Justin Domer, and Florida State Guard Executive Director Mark Thieme. The event focused on reviewing past achievements and innovations in emergency response and recovery.
“Thanks to the leadership of Governor DeSantis and collaboration with the Florida Legislature, Florida leads the nation in the field of emergency management,” stated Kevin Guthrie. He emphasized their commitment to strengthening communities and enhancing resilience.
The event also highlighted FDEM’s partnership with the Florida Disaster Foundation, a nonprofit organization aiding disaster response efforts. Together with other state departments, they packed 1,000 starter disaster supply kits for students in Lafayette County.
Commissioner Manny Diaz, Jr. acknowledged FDEM as a strong partner in reopening schools post-disaster. “I am proud of the work we have done together to support our students after a busy hurricane season,” he said.
Secretary of Commerce J. Alex Kelly praised Governor DeSantis’ leadership during the 2024 Hurricane Season. “FloridaCommerce…was able to get boots on the ground immediately after the storms,” he noted, highlighting over $108 million approved for businesses through an emergency loan program.
Mark Thieme from the Florida State Guard spoke about ongoing joint training efforts: “Together, we deliver a reassurance…to Florida families that when disaster strikes—we ALL answer the call.”
In recent years, FDEM has managed record-breaking responses to Hurricanes Debby, Helene, and Milton. Under Governor DeSantis’ leadership, over $12 billion has been distributed for disaster recovery across key sectors.
