Patricia Levesque, the Executive Director of the Foundation for Florida’s Future, has commented on the recent passage of House Bill 1255 by the Florida House. The bill aims to enhance math education throughout the state.
“Today, the Florida House took an important next step to improve math education in the Sunshine State,” Levesque stated. She emphasized that Florida has long had effective literacy policies that have significantly boosted student performance and highlighted the need for a similar approach in math education. This is particularly pertinent as improvements in math scores following the pandemic have been slow.
“HB 1255 will strengthen the state’s commitment to high-quality math policy, ensuring teachers are equipped with necessary content knowledge and schools implement comprehensive systems of math instruction and supports,” Levesque continued. She also acknowledged Rep. Dana Trabulsy’s efforts, saying, “We thank Rep. Dana Trabulsy for her leadership in making sure Florida schools are equipped to deliver a quality education to every student.”
The specifics of House Bill 1255 include several measures: educator preparation programs must specify the type and amount of math content provided to teacher candidates. It mandates alternative certification pathways to increase math content in preparation programs. Additionally, school districts must create a comprehensive system of mathematics instruction within their reading instruction plans. This system could involve more daily evidence-based math instruction, math coaches, and tutoring services. Lastly, a new mathematics endorsement pathway will be available to teachers starting in the 2027-2028 school year.
