Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has announced the return of the state’s Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday, which will take place from August 1 to August 31. The initiative is intended to help families save money on school-related purchases as the new academic year approaches.

“Proud to deliver additional sales tax holidays, including the Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday that begins on August 1. With the new school year just around the corner, Florida families can save on back-to-school shopping during the tax holiday for the entire month of August,” said Governor Ron DeSantis. “By cutting taxes, empowering parents, and growing our economy, we’re making it easier for people to live, work, and thrive in the Free State of Florida.”

The tax holiday provides exemptions for a range of items. School supplies priced at $50 or less are included in the program. Eligible items listed by officials include binders, notebooks, pens and pencils, and lunch boxes. Clothing and footwear items costing $100 or less—such as backpacks, pants, shoes, shirts, and sweaters—are also exempt from sales tax during this period.

Additionally, learning aids like interactive books, puzzles, and flashcards that cost $30 or less qualify for exemption. Personal computers and accessories for noncommercial home use with a price tag of $1,500 or less—including laptops, flash drives, printers, and headphones—are covered as well.

Florida continues to maintain one of the lowest per-capita tax burdens in the country. The state also holds a AAA credit rating from all major agencies and has consistently reported low unemployment rates. Earlier this year Governor DeSantis signed into law a budget for Fiscal Year 2025–26 that includes $2 billion in total tax relief measures such as permanent repeal of the Business Rent Tax and targeted sales tax holidays aimed at supporting residents.

This year’s package delivers $450 million in savings through these sales tax holidays designed specifically for Florida families.
