An outbreak of Equine Herpes Virus-Type 1 (EHV-1) has been reported following two recent equestrian events in Texas and Oklahoma. The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS) released a statement about the incidents, which occurred at a World Pro Rodeo Association event in Waco, Texas from November 5 to 9, 2025, and at a Barrel Futurities of America event in Guthrie, Oklahoma from November 17 to 18.
According to FDACS, no cases linked to this outbreak have been identified in Florida so far. The department’s Division of Animal Industry advises horse owners and handlers who may have participated in either event to follow strict biosecurity measures. These precautions are considered important for preventing the virus from spreading.
The state has not implemented any new movement restrictions or additional requirements regarding animal transport at this time.
“While no cases of EHV-1 associated with this outbreak have been identified in Florida, FDACS Division of Animal Industry recommends practicing strict biosecurity measures for horses that may have been associated with either of these events, as such measures are vital in preventing the spread of the virus. The State of Florida has not imposed any movement restrictions or additional requirements for animal movement.”
Further resources and information are available through FDACS for those seeking guidance on protecting their animals.
