FloridaCommerce reports labor force growth and private sector job gains in Tampa for February 2025

The February 2025 employment data for the Tampa metro area has been released by FloridaCommerce, highlighting notable trends in the region’s labor market. The labor force in the area increased by 8,888 people, a growth rate of 0.5% compared to the previous year. Tamp was also ranked third among metro areas in the number of private sector jobs created over the same period. Specifically, private sector employment in the Tampa area saw an uplift of 11,900 jobs, representing a 0.9% increase. The education and health services sectors emerged as the top gainer, adding 5,300 jobs.

Despite these developments, the unemployment rate in the Tampa region rose slightly to 3.8% in February 2025, from 3.3% in February 2024.

Statewide, Florida’s manufacturing industry showed signs of progress, adding 1,400 jobs in February 2025, marking continued growth for four months straight. This sector’s employment now totals 432,000 jobs, the highest since 2002. Florida’s manufacturing landscape has expanded with 27,310 establishments, achieving a 32% growth since the first quarter of 2019.

Florida also saw a statewide increase in private employment by 7,200 jobs, an increment of 0.1% over the month, while the year-on-year increase stood at 105,700 jobs, or 1.2%. FloridaCommerce notes that the private sector job growth rate for the state has surpassed the national rate in 44 of the past 47 months since April 2021. The state has maintained an unemployment rate below the national average for 52 months, dating back to November 2020.

Construction was the leading sector in February, with an addition of 5,500 jobs or 0.8%, driven by residential construction trades such as electrical, painting, roofing, and plumbing.

Numerous resources are available to assist job seekers in Florida. The Labor Exchange Marketplace, known as Employ Florida, bridges job seekers with employment and training opportunities. The CareerSource Florida network offers counseling, skills assessments, resume assistance, and job placement services. Apprentice Florida, a collaborative effort of the Florida Department of Education, FloridaCommerce, and CareerSource Florida, aims to expand apprenticeships. Veterans Florida assists military veterans in transitioning to civilian careers, while the Military Family Employment Advocacy Program offers services to military spouses and family members.
