Mark your calendars for the upcoming license-free freshwater fishing weekend organized by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC). This event is scheduled for April 5 and 6, offering residents and visitors a chance to enjoy freshwater fishing across Florida without needing a fishing license.

Participants can fish from shore or boat, with various options available statewide. The FWC encourages anglers of all ages and skill levels to take advantage of this opportunity. “Visit the FWC’s fishing basics webpage for tips and information on how to start fishing or refresh your knowledge,” suggests the commission.

While no license is required during this special weekend, other regulations such as seasons, bag, and size limits remain in effect. Those interested in renewing or purchasing a fishing license can do so at GoOutdoorsFlorida.com.

Two family-friendly events are planned during this weekend:

At Tenoroc Fish Management Area in Lakeland, FL, an event will be held on April 5 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Pre-registration is required by Friday, April 4 at 5 p.m., which can be done by calling the FWC at 863-648-3200. The event includes a casting contest, exhibitors, outdoor activities for youth participants, and a free lunch provided by Publix Supermarkets and the Fish & Wildlife Foundation of Florida. Bait and loaner rods and reels will be available free of charge for youth aged 15 and younger who must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Another event will take place at the Florida Bass Conservation Center in Webster, FL on April 5 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Attendees should bring their own fishing gear and bait. Vital Fleet Services will provide a free lunch of hotdogs and hamburgers.

For more information on where to go freshwater or saltwater fishing or find nearby boat ramps or piers, visit MyFWC.com. Additionally, FWC’s bass fishing recognition program TrophyCatch invites anglers to submit their catches of largemouth bass weighing eight pounds or more for prizes.

Looking ahead? Plan for the next license-free freshwater fishing weekend set for June 8 and 9.
