The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) hosted a license-free freshwater fishing weekend on June 8 and 9. The event aimed to encourage Florida residents and visitors of all ages and skill levels to participate in recreational fishing.
“Freshwater fishing is a fun activity for all ages to enjoy,” the FWC stated, highlighting the numerous locations across Florida available for exploration. Resources were provided by the FWC to assist new anglers in getting started.
Popular fishing spots included Fish Management Areas, fishing piers, boat ramps, lakes, and rivers. Guidance was also offered on essential aspects such as knot tying, necessary equipment for first-time anglers, species to fish for, and site forecasts.
Participants were invited to submit their catches for certificates and enter prize draws through FWC’s Big Catch and TrophyCatch programs. Largemouth bass remained a favorite among anglers; those catching bass weighing eight pounds or more were encouraged to submit them to TrophyCatch. This season featured a special promotion with pink-tagged bass in five water bodies across the state offering additional prizes.
Despite the license-free status during this weekend, all other regulations—including seasons, bag limits, and size limits—remained in effect.
