The Jacksonville Port Authority (JAXPORT) recently marked the arrival of Maersk’s Seaspan Montevideo, a significant vessel as part of the new Gemini Cooperation. This initiative is a collaboration between ocean carriers Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd, aimed at enhancing connectivity by linking Jacksonville, Florida, directly with Cartagena, Colombia. Cartagena serves as a crucial transshipment hub within the Gemini global network.
The service includes weekly calls at JAXPORT’s Blount Island Marine Terminal, with SSA Atlantic providing stevedoring services. The transshipment calls extend to ports across Asia, Europe, South America’s west coast, Central America, Oceania, and the Caribbean.
The Gemini network comprises 290 vessels and boasts a combined capacity of 3.4 million TEUs (20-foot equivalent units or containers). It offers extensive reach and flexibility for shippers through its 26 mainline ocean services and 32 dedicated shuttle services.
Robert Peek, JAXPORT Chief Commercial Officer, commented on the development: “Our new connectivity through Gemini provides even more options for customers seeking to move cargo through the Southeast US.” He further highlighted that “the service offers flexible transshipment, access to new markets, and competitive transit times backed by Gemini’s schedule reliability.”
To commemorate the vessel’s visit to Jacksonville, JAXPORT’s commercial team presented Maersk leadership with a plaque. Representatives from port partners Primark, V.Alexander, and John S. James Co. were present to observe port operations firsthand and participate in a meet-and-greet aboard the vessel.
