Florida has lost a significant figure in its political and educational landscape with the passing of John E. Thrasher. Governor Jeb Bush issued a statement reflecting on Thrasher’s extensive contributions to the state.

“Florida has lost one of our state’s longest serving and most respected leaders. From the halls of government to the classrooms of academia, John Thrasher served Florida with unwavering commitment throughout his life. He leaves a lasting legacy of excellence and service that will continue to inspire the many colleagues, lawmakers, students and friends who had the privilege to know him.”

Bush highlighted his personal connection with Thrasher, recalling their time working together during a pivotal period in Florida’s history. “I was honored to serve alongside John during a transformative time in Florida’s history. His counsel was wise, his leadership calm, compassionate and principled, and his heart always aligned with doing what was right.”

Thrasher’s career spanned military service, leadership roles in both the Florida House and Senate, and later as President of Florida State University. Bush noted Thrasher’s belief in using one’s gifts for service: “Throughout his career—from his distinguished military service to his leadership in the Florida House and Senate, and later as President of Florida State University—John believed that our gifts are meant to be used in service to others.”

In closing, Bush offered condolences to Thrasher’s family: “Our dear friend and colleague has been called home to eternal peace. Columba and I extend our deepest condolences to Jean and the Thrasher family and pray that God’s grace surround them. May they find strength in knowing John’s legacy will endure as one of our finest examples of faithful service and love for Florida and its people.”
