Jacksonville sees significant job growth driven by education and health services

FloridaCommerce has reported that the Jacksonville metro area experienced a gain of 9,100 private sector jobs over the year in April 2025. The education and health services industry was the leading contributor, adding 6,900 jobs. This growth places Jacksonville at the forefront among metro areas for job gains in this sector.

The labor force in Jacksonville increased by 5,618 people over the year, representing a 0.7% rise. However, the unemployment rate also rose to 3.5%, up from 3.0% in April of the previous year.

Statewide, Florida’s private sector employment saw an increase of 21,800 jobs from March to April 2025. The state’s economy is valued at $1.7 trillion and continues to be recognized as a leading economic force nationally. According to U.S. News & World Report, Florida ranks first in both overall economy and economic growth for two consecutive years.

Since May 2020, Florida employers have added jobs consistently for most months—57 out of the last 60—and total private employment grew by 125,700 jobs over the past year as of April 2025. The state’s unemployment rate has remained below the national average since November 2020.

In terms of job growth sectors statewide for April 2025, education and health services led with an addition of 8,000 jobs followed by professional and business services with an increase of 7,400 positions.

Florida offers several resources for job seekers including Employ Florida which connects individuals with employment opportunities and training programs; CareerSource Florida provides career counseling and placement support; Apprentice Florida expands apprenticeship programs; Veterans Florida assists military veterans transitioning to civilian careers; and various initiatives support military families seeking employment.

There are approximately 414,000 job openings posted online across Florida as per data from April. Floridians can access assistance through CareerSource Florida’s network to enhance their employability skills such as resume writing and interviewing techniques at no cost.
