Pensacola sees job growth in education and hospitality sectors

FloridaCommerce has reported an increase in private sector employment in the Pensacola metro area, with 2,000 jobs added over the year by January 2025. The education and health services sector, along with leisure and hospitality, each contributed 800 new jobs to this growth.

The labor force in Pensacola grew by 3,369 people, marking a 1.4% increase over the year. However, the unemployment rate rose to 4.0%, up from 3.5% in January 2024.

Governor Ron DeSantis highlighted that Florida’s labor force surpassed 11.1 million in January 2025, reflecting ongoing economic strength. Manufacturing was among the sectors showing job growth, reaching a total of 430,800 positions.

Revised data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics shows Florida’s labor force is larger than previously estimated by an additional 162,000 workers. This revision indicates stability or growth in the labor force for most months over the past year.

Statewide, Florida added 113,600 jobs over the year as of January 2025. The state’s private sector job growth rate of 1.3% exceeded the national average of 1.2%. For more than four years since November 2020, Florida’s unemployment rate has remained below the national average.

In terms of industry-specific gains across Florida, education and health services led with an addition of 7,200 jobs from December to January; leisure and hospitality followed closely with an increase of 6,100 jobs.
