Port Canaveral, a key seaport in Florida, is committing over $500 million to enhance its facilities and operations. This investment forms part of the “Port Canaveral Advantage” plan, which aims to boost capacity and capabilities across all areas of its business.
“Port Canaveral has been a driving force for the Central Florida economy for over seven decades and the continued prosperity of our Port community depends on our continued success,” said Capt. John Murray, CEO of Port Canaveral. He added, “As we look ahead to the future, our challenge is balancing the business demands we have today while positioning ourselves for continued growth.”
The improvement program focuses on infrastructure projects like accommodating new cruise ships, expanding cargo berths, updating facilities maintenance, deploying new technologies, and renovating recreational facilities such as Jetty Park. Capt. Murray noted that these investments are meant to benefit communities from the Space Coast to Central Florida.
One significant project is the expansion of Cruise Terminal 5 (CT-5), designed by BEA Architects of Miami. The terminal will increase in size by 65 percent during an estimated 16-month construction period without disrupting operations. Additionally, Cruise Terminal 10 will undergo a feasibility study for further expansion by June 2025.
Upgrades at Cruise Terminal 1 will start in May 2025 with new canopies, walkways, landscaping, and lighting improvements. These enhancements complement refurbishments to adjacent parking facilities and gangway upgrades.
Earlier this year saw the formation of a new Cruise Automation Team responsible for efficient passenger boarding bridge operations. Steve Shelton has been appointed Vice President of Facilities Optimization to oversee these efforts.
For commercial cargo operations, renovations on existing piers aim to create more berth space and improve vessel turn times. North Cargo Berths 3 and 4 are nearing completion with additional multipurpose bulkhead space. Other improvements include harbor deepening and dredging projects.
Port Canaveral supports America’s space program through partnerships with SpaceX and Blue Origin. Both companies use port facilities for docking vessels and offloading launch vehicle components.
Jetty Park is also undergoing upgrades with new amenities including a camp store, cabins, dog park, renovated bathhouses, improved roadways and lighting, playground refurbishments, and redesigned boat ramps at Rodney Ketchum Park.
