Florida Policy Institute (FPI), Florida Impact, and Florida Voices for Health recently organized a town hall meeting in Davenport, Florida. The event focused on the potential effects of proposed federal cuts to Medicaid and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) on local families. The gathering took place at the Community of Faith United Methodist Church.

Congressional leaders have suggested over $1 trillion in reductions to Medicaid, SNAP, and other essential services as a means to offset tax cuts for wealthier individuals. This proposal has raised concerns among community members about its impact on everyday Floridians.

Sadaf Knight, CEO of FPI and moderator of the panel discussion, stated: “There’s no question that these cuts would have a really devastating impact on families, children, and communities across Florida.” She emphasized that the consequences would extend beyond those directly benefiting from these programs.

Scott Darius, executive director of Florida Voices for Health and one of the panelists, noted: “Medicaid is not a perfect program; there aren’t providers in a lot of places…to entertain cuts instead of having serious conversations about how to improve the program feels like the wrong way.”

Kim Johnson, president/CEO of Florida Impact and another panelist, highlighted SNAP’s role as a safety net: “SNAP has really helped to be a safety net; it’s that extra opportunity for families to be able to put food on the table.”

During the Q&A session, attendees shared personal stories illustrating how these programs positively affect their lives. J.J. Holmes, a 21-year-old college student with cerebral palsy, expressed his concerns: “Medicaid isn’t some handout to me. It’s the difference between living in my community or being trapped in a state-run nursing home.”

The hosting organizations encouraged participants to contact their congressional representatives via email to advocate for protecting SNAP and Medicaid.

FPI is an independent nonprofit organization focused on improving economic mobility and quality of life through state policies.
