The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) has announced the closure of recreational harvesting of greater amberjack in Atlantic state waters starting April 1. This closure will last until April 30, with the harvest reopening on May 1, 2025.

“This is an annual spawning season closure to protect greater amberjack during spawning activities,” stated the FWC. The commission emphasizes its commitment to collecting crucial data on recreational harvest fishing to manage popular reef fish like greater amberjack effectively.

To aid in this effort, the State Reef Fish Survey provides detailed catch and effort information that supports better fisheries management. The FWC encourages individuals to register as a State Reef Fish Angler, a requirement for those intending to fish or harvest specific reef fish species from private vessels in Florida. More information about this survey can be found at MyFWC.com/SRFS.

For those seeking current regulations on recreational amberjack fishing, the FWC directs individuals to visit MyFWC.com/Marine and follow the links under “Recreational Regulations” for “Reef Fish” and “Amberjack.”
