The National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) Florida has expressed its appreciation for Representative Tom Fabricio’s leadership on tort reform, highlighting his support for small businesses. The announcement was made on the social media platform X on March 19.
Tort reform has been a significant concern for Florida’s small businesses, as excessive litigation can lead to increased operational costs and hinder economic growth. According to the NFIB, the passage of House Bill 837 was a top priority to address these issues.
House Bill 837, signed into law in 2023, introduced comprehensive changes to Florida’s legal system. These changes include modifications to the bad faith framework, elimination of one-way attorney’s fees, and reduction of the statute of limitations for general negligence. Prior to these reforms, Florida was often labeled a “Judicial Hellhole” due to its litigious environment, which reportedly cost residents approximately $812.52 each per year in what was termed a “tort tax.”
Representative Fabricio has been a prominent advocate for legal reforms in Florida, co-sponsoring HB 837 to address issues of lawsuit abuse. The James Madison Institute recognized his efforts, noting that the passage of this bill marked a significant step toward restoring fairness in the state’s legal system.
