Southwest Florida sees over 3K rise in labor force by January

FloridaCommerce has reported an increase in the labor force across Southwest Florida by more than 3,000 in January 2025 compared to the previous year. Specifically, the Cape Coral-Fort Myers metro area saw a rise of 2,070 workers, representing a 0.6% increase. The Naples metro area experienced a growth of 974 workers, marking a 0.5% rise.

In terms of job gains within specific sectors, education and health services led with an addition of 500 jobs in Naples and 1,400 jobs in Cape Coral-Fort Myers over the past year. However, unemployment rates have also increased; Naples recorded a rate of 3.8%, up from 3.2% the previous year, while Ft. Myers noted a rate of 4.0%, rising from 3.4%.

Governor Ron DeSantis announced that Florida’s labor force exceeded 11.1 million as of January 2025, showcasing economic resilience with continuous job growth across major industries such as manufacturing which reached employment figures of 430,800.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics revised its data upwards by approximately 162,000 workers for Florida’s labor force size over recent months. The state added around 113,600 jobs during this period and maintained private sector job growth at a rate slightly higher than the national average.

Among all industries statewide, education and health services saw the most significant job increases adding approximately 7,200 positions from December to January; leisure and hospitality followed closely with an addition of about 6,100 jobs.

Several resources are available for job seekers including Employ Florida for connecting individuals to training opportunities and career placements through CareerSource Florida’s network offering tailored support like resume assistance and skills assessments.

Apprentice Florida aims to broaden apprenticeship programs while Veterans Florida helps military veterans transition into civilian roles aligning with their service-acquired skills. The Military Family Employment Advocacy Program offers workforce services to military families throughout local centers in Florida.

Currently there are more than 393,000 job postings online indicating robust opportunities for those seeking employment in various fields across the state.
