Florida hosts first-ever emergency management symposium

Last week marked the inaugural Florida’s Training for Emergency Management (FTEM) Symposium: Leading from the Trenches in St. Augustine, Florida. The event was hosted by the Florida Division of Emergency Management and the Florida Disaster Foundation to provide attendees with training, collaboration opportunities, and leadership development sessions.

“I am incredibly proud of FTEM and its essential role in progressing emergency management as a whole statewide,” said Division Executive Director Kevin Guthrie. “We have worked for over a year to make FTEM into a symposium that caters to various disciplines within emergency management and brought together more than 300 attendees to benefit from these opportunities.”

“One of the Florida Disaster Foundation’s main goals is to provide vital training for emergency management professionals,” said Foundation Chair Brian Mimbs. “FTEM not only fulfills that mission but also serves as a place where we can come together to improve our skillsets for the enhanced resiliency of Florida’s communities.”

FTEM began on Monday, June 10, with opening remarks from Stanley McChrystal, retired four-star general and founder of the McChrystal Group. Highlights included unique sessions hosted by sponsors, 15 leadership talks and panels, and over 40 training courses. The final panel on Friday, June 14 comprised former state emergency management directors.
