Following severe weather that impacted North Florida on May 10, 2024, Governor Ron DeSantis issued Executive Order 24-94, declaring a state of emergency in twelve counties. The counties affected are Baker, Columbia, Gadsden, Hamilton, Jefferson, Lafayette, Leon, Liberty, Madison, Suwannee, Taylor, and Wakulla.
The executive order details the damage caused by numerous tornadoes and strong wind gusts to residences, businesses, powerlines, and other infrastructure across North Florida. It notes that thousands of residents have lost power due to widespread debris and storm-related injuries have been reported.
Governor DeSantis stated: "As Governor of Florida, I am responsible to meet the dangers presented to the State of Florida and its people by this emergency."
Under the executive order:
1. The Director of the Division of Emergency Management is designated as the State Coordinating Officer for the duration of this emergency.
2. The Director is authorized to invoke and administer various compacts and agreements with other states and federal agencies to coordinate resources.
3. All state agencies are directed to identify personnel needed for response efforts.
4. The Adjutant General is ordered to activate the Florida National Guard as necessary.
5. Certain statutes and rules may be suspended or waived if they hinder response actions.
Additionally, sufficient funds will be made available from the Emergency Preparedness and Response Fund to cover costs associated with disaster management.
This executive order took immediate effect upon issuance on June 11th and will remain in force for sixty days unless extended.
