Doug Wheeler appointed director at George Gibbs Center for Economic Prosperity

The James Madison Institute (JMI) has announced the appointment of Doug Wheeler as the new director of the George Gibbs Center for Economic Prosperity. In this role, Wheeler will collaborate with business leaders, policymakers, researchers, free market partners, and stakeholders to advocate for market-based policies rooted in limited government, free enterprise, and individual freedoms.

"As JMI grows and expands our presence both in Florida and beyond, we are pleased to welcome Doug Wheeler as our new director of the George Gibbs Center for Economic Prosperity. His background and policy knowledge along with his shared belief in the principles of freedom and liberty make Doug the perfect candidate to help the leaders of our state navigate both the challenges and opportunities in this critically important area," said Dr. Bob McClure, President and CEO of The James Madison Institute.

Wheeler previously served as President of D. Wheeler Strategies, a public affairs firm offering strategic consulting services across local, state, and federal government affairs, brand & business development, communications, and strategic planning.

He also held the position of President & CEO at the Florida Ports Council (FPC), where he led efforts to increase infrastructure funding for seaports, spearheaded international trade missions to enhance Florida's global presence, and expanded advocacy efforts for Florida’s seaports over more than a decade.

With over 25 years in governmental affairs and association leadership at both state and federal levels, Wheeler has also served as Vice President with the Florida Chamber of Commerce. During his tenure there, he managed a federation comprising over 130,000 grassroots members representing Florida’s business community's free-market interests.

Wheeler is actively involved in various organizations including serving on the Executive Committee and Board Member of the Economic Club of Florida; Board member of the Network of Entrepreneurs & Business Advocates; a graduate from Jim Moran Institute for Global Entrepreneurship – Small Business Executive Program; and an Honorary Sheriff’s Deputy in Leon County.

A graduate from The Florida State University with a degree in Political Science emphasizing Political Communications, Wheeler resides in Tallahassee with his wife Ami and their two children.
