Florida Department of Education announces updated grading scale for state schools

The Florida Department of Education has announced the 2024 school grades under a new grading scale. Commissioner of Education Manny Diaz, Jr. commented on the results, stating, “This year’s school grades reflect Florida’s steadfast commitment to excellence in education. Under Governor Ron DeSantis’ leadership, we have continued to raise the bar for providing students with a quality education that suits their individual needs, and these school grades are proof positive that our approach is working.”

In 2024, elementary schools saw a 4 percentage point increase in those earning an “A” grade compared to the previous year. Middle schools experienced a 7 percentage point rise, while high schools observed a 10 percentage point improvement. Combination schools also reported a 7 percentage point increase in “A” grades.

Charter schools in Florida showed notable progress as well. Of the 602 charter schools graded in 2024, 69% received an “A” or “B”.

State law mandates that the State Board of Education review the school grading scale when learning gains data become available and decide if adjustments are necessary. With two years of progress monitoring data now accessible, annual learning gains components in English Language Arts and Mathematics have been reintroduced into the school grading formula.

The State Board of Education voted on amendments to adjust the grading scale: elementary schools will use the scale from 2014-15 to 2021-22, while middle, high, and combination schools will be graded using a new scale. This decision aims to ensure that school grades accurately reflect performance across different types of schools.

The new scale ranges for school grades are as follows:

Elementary Schools:

- A: 62%-100%

- B: 54%-61%

- C: 41%-53%

- D: 32%-40%

- F: 0%-31%

Middle, High, and Combination Schools:

- A: 64%-100%

- B: 57%-63%

- C: 44%-56%

- D: 34%-43%

- F: 0%-33%
