Tampa sees significant growth in private sector employment for July

FloridaCommerce Announces Tampa Metro Area Gained the Third-Highest Number of Private Sector Jobs Over the Year in July 2024 Among All Metro Areas

TAMPA, Fla. — Today, FloridaCommerce announced that the Tampa metro area gained the third-highest number of private sector jobs over the year in July 2024 among all metro areas. The area’s private sector employment increased by 23,500 (+1.7%) over the year in July 2024. In July 2024, the Tampa metro area led all metro areas in job gains over the year in manufacturing, increasing by 2,300 jobs; and financial activities, increasing by 900 jobs.

The Tampa area unemployment rate was 3.8% in July 2024, up 0.6 percentage points from the July 2023 rate of 3.2%. The Tampa area’s labor force was down 0.2 percent (-4,088) over the year in July 2024.

Florida’s unemployment rate continues to remain lower than the nation, with a rate of 3.3% in July 2024, a full percentage point lower than the national rate of 4.3%. Florida’s private sector employment has grown by 201,500 jobs (+2.3%) over the year since July 2023, faster than the national rate of 1.5 percent over the same time period.

In July 2024, the leisure and hospitality sector gained the most jobs among all major industries adding 11,200 jobs (+0.9%) from the previous month, followed by construction which added 6,300 jobs (+1.0%). Florida’s labor force grew by 35,000 (+0.3%) over the year since July 2023.
