FloridaCommerce Announces Fort Lauderdale Area Leads in Job Gains for July 2024

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Today, FloridaCommerce announced that the Fort Lauderdale metro area leads in job gains over the year in trade, transportation, and utilities (+5,200 jobs); government (+4,300 jobs); and other services (+3,500 jobs). The area’s private sector employment in July 2024 was 820,800, an increase of 19,900 jobs (+2.5%) over the year.

The Fort Lauderdale area unemployment rate was 3.6% in July 2024, up 0.5 percentage points from the July 2023 rate of 3.1%. The labor force increased by 7,081 individuals or +0.7% over the year.

Florida's unemployment rate remains lower than the national average at 3.3% in July 2024 compared to the national rate of 4.3%. The state's private sector employment has grown by 201,500 jobs (+2.3%) since July 2023, surpassing the national growth rate of 1.5%.

In July 2024, the leisure and hospitality sector gained the most jobs among all major industries with an addition of 11,200 jobs (+0.9%) from the previous month. This was followed by construction which added 6,300 jobs (+1.0%). Florida's labor force grew by 35,000 (+0.3%) over the past year.

"Job creators continue to demonstrate great confidence in Florida through their investments," a statement from FloridaCommerce reads. "Creating high-skill, high-wage jobs ensures economic resiliency and success for generations of Floridians."

The data indicates numerous job opportunities are available for those seeking employment with more than 433,000 positions posted online as of July.
