Florida DEP expands Little Big Econ State Forest by over 1,300 acres

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has announced the addition of more than 1,300 acres to the Little Big Econ State Forest. This expansion is part of the Yarborough Ranch Florida Forever Project.

According to DEP Secretary Shawn Hamilton, “This acquisition is a significant milestone in our ongoing efforts to conserve and protect Florida’s natural resources.” The new land will provide additional habitat for wildlife and enhance recreational opportunities for visitors.

The newly acquired area includes diverse ecosystems such as wetlands, pine flatwoods, and hardwood hammocks. These habitats are crucial for various species, including the Florida black bear and numerous bird species.

“The preservation of this land helps ensure that future generations can enjoy Florida’s unique natural beauty,” said Hamilton. The project was made possible through funding from the state’s Florida Forever program, which aims to conserve environmentally sensitive lands.

The Little Big Econ State Forest now spans over 10,000 acres. It offers activities like hiking, horseback riding, and wildlife viewing. Local communities are expected to benefit from increased tourism and educational opportunities related to environmental conservation.

“This is a win-win situation for both nature lovers and the local economy,” stated Hamilton. The DEP plans to continue its efforts in acquiring and preserving critical lands across the state.
