Governor DeSantis provides update on Hurricane Helene preparedness efforts

Today, Governor Ron DeSantis, Major General John D. Haas of the Florida Division of Emergency Management (FDEM), and Florida Department of Transportation Secretary Jared Purdue provided updates on preparedness efforts ahead of Hurricane Helene at the State Emergency Operations Center. As of 8:00 am ET, Hurricane Helene has intensified to a Category 2 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 100 mph and higher gusts. The hurricane is expected to strengthen further and reach the Florida Big Bend coast tonight as a major hurricane.

Governor DeSantis issued Executive Order 24-209 on September 24, updating EO 24-208 and declaring a state of emergency for 61 counties. This allows state officials to allocate critical resources to communities in anticipation of storm impacts.

Following a request from Governor DeSantis, FEMA approved the state's pre-landfall disaster declaration request, providing federal resources such as personnel, equipment, supplies, and funding for emergency protective measures for the 41 counties included in Executive Order 24-208.

Evacuation orders are in effect across multiple counties. Residents under mandatory evacuation orders are urged to comply. Details can be found at FloridaDisaster.org/EvacuationOrders.

Residents needing assistance with shelters can call (800) 729-3413 or the State Assistance Information Line (SAIL) at (800) 342-3557 for help in English, Spanish, and Haitian-Creole.
