Florida preserves 1,642 acres of farmland through protection program

Commissioner Wilton Simpson has announced the preservation of 1,642 acres of Florida farmland through the Rural and Family Lands Protection Program. The program aims to safeguard working agricultural lands from development while maintaining their economic viability.

"Through this program, we are ensuring that future generations will have access to fresh food and green spaces," said Simpson. "We are also supporting our farmers who work tirelessly to feed our state."

The latest acquisition includes properties in Okeechobee and Highlands counties. These lands will remain in agricultural use, contributing to the local economy and preserving Florida's rural character.

"We are committed to protecting Florida’s natural resources," added Simpson. "This program is a vital tool in achieving that goal."

The Rural and Family Lands Protection Program has now preserved over 80,000 acres since its inception. The initiative continues to be a key part of Florida's strategy for sustainable land management.
