Florida's agricultural sector has received a significant boost with the approval of the first recovery loan for farmers affected by Hurricane Helene. This initiative is part of the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services' Agriculture and Aquaculture Producers Natural Disaster Recovery Loan Program, which was announced by Commissioner Wilton Simpson.
The application process for this program was launched on September 27, 2024, aiming to support eligible producers in restoring essential physical property or removing debris. The approval comes shortly after Hurricane Helene struck Florida, underscoring the urgency of assistance.
Commissioner Simpson emphasized the importance of prompt action: “Swift and meaningful action is crucial in aiding our farmers, ranchers, and growers in their recovery from Hurricane Helene, especially in a region that is still recovering from Idalia and Debby." He expressed pride in achieving quick loan approval through the department's program just days after the hurricane made landfall.
Simpson also highlighted efforts to address federal shortcomings: “We know our farmers are hurting and we are doing all we can on the state level to make up for serious federal negligence." He acknowledged collaboration with Speaker of the House Mike Johnson and Senator Rick Scott, who share his commitment to reducing bureaucratic hurdles.
Producers impacted by Hurricane Helene are advised to document property damage and retain receipts related to recovery. Details about applying for assistance are available online. Those previously funded for damages from Hurricane Debby may also be eligible for new loans under certain conditions.
The Florida Legislature allocated $75 million during a special session in November 2023 through House Bill 1-C. This fund supports agriculture and aquaculture producers recovering from natural disasters via a revolving loan system.
