The National Hurricane Center has issued a prediction that Hurricane Milton will escalate to a Category 5 storm before reaching the Gulf Coast near Tampa. This development marks the second significant hurricane event in Florida within two weeks.
Previously, Hurricane Helene impacted Florida’s Big Bend on September 26 and proceeded towards the Carolinas. In contrast, Hurricane Milton is projected to traverse Central Florida and depart along the Atlantic Coast by early Thursday. Despite anticipated weakening, Milton is expected to retain hurricane-force winds ranging from 74 to 110 miles per hour as it crosses the peninsula.
Businesses are advised to review their disaster plans promptly or create one if absent. The plan should include an understanding of potential risks such as flooding, tornadoes, hail storms, and earthquakes. Ensuring adequate insurance coverage is crucial; this includes business interruption insurance and flood insurance.
It is recommended that businesses document their assets through photographs and videos stored securely online or in waterproof containers at a safe location outside the state. An emergency response plan should be established with clear evacuation routes and meeting places, along with accessible emergency contact numbers.
A communication strategy is essential, designating a contact person for employees, customers, and vendors. Due to possible disruptions in local communication channels post-disaster, an out-of-state contact should be identified for coordination purposes.
Backing up business records is vital; copies of important documents should be stored securely offsite or in fireproof safety deposit boxes. Electronic records should be backed up to cloud storage.
Additionally, assembling a disaster kit containing essentials like flashlights, radios, batteries, first-aid supplies, non-perishable food items, bottled water, basic tools, plastic sheeting, and garbage bags is recommended for immediate access during emergencies. Employees are also encouraged to prepare personal disaster kits for themselves and their families.
