Governor DeSantis allocates $9.5M for SeaPort Manatee post-hurricane recovery

Today, Governor Ron DeSantis announced a $9.5 million award to SeaPort Manatee for infrastructure repairs following Hurricane Milton's damage. The port, a crucial hub in Southwest Florida, faced potential losses of $225 million due to the hurricane. Damage included the loss of 10 out of 13 warehouses and three docking facilities.

Governor DeSantis stated, “This action to get SeaPort Manatee back to full operations will benefit the people of Florida, ensure the hardening of our infrastructure for future disasters, and ensure normal life is resumed for Floridians as soon as possible.” The funding will cover emergency berth repairs and dredging ($5.5 million), security needs ($3.5 million), and planning activities ($500,000).

State agencies are also involved in recovery efforts. The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) will provide expertise and workers; the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) will expedite permits; and the Florida Division of Emergency Management (FDEM) will assist with FEMA processes. Additionally, the Florida National Guard will help reestablish security.

FDOT Secretary Jared W. Perdue commented on the importance of seaports: “With the major impact that seaports have on our state’s economy and the quality of life for our residents, it’s critical that we ensure our seaports are open and fully operational.”

SeaPort Manatee contributed significantly to the economy in 2023 by supporting jobs and generating taxes.
