DeSantis allocates funds to repair SeaPort Manatee after hurricane damages

Governor Ron DeSantis has allocated $9.5 million to SeaPort Manatee for repairs after it sustained significant damage from Hurricane Milton. The port, a crucial hub in Southwest Florida, suffered potential losses estimated at $225 million, including the destruction of 10 out of 13 warehouses and damage to three docking facilities.

“This action to get SeaPort Manatee back to full operations will benefit the people of Florida, ensure the hardening of our infrastructure for future disasters, and ensure normal life is resumed for Floridians as soon as possible,” stated Governor Ron DeSantis.

The funds are designated for various recovery efforts: $5.5 million will go towards emergency berth repairs and dredging, $3.5 million for security needs and access control, and $500,000 for planning infrastructure fortification.

Additional support includes state agencies' involvement under Governor DeSantis's directive. The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) will provide experts and skilled workers; the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) will expedite permits; the Florida Division of Emergency Management (FDEM) will aid in FEMA processes; and the Florida National Guard will assist with security and repairs.

“With the major impact that seaports have on our state’s economy and the quality of life for our residents, it’s critical that we ensure our seaports are open and fully operational, particularly SeaPort Manatee given the significant damage they sustained following Hurricane Milton,” said FDOT Secretary Jared W. Perdue.

SeaPort Manatee plays a vital role in supporting jobs and contributing to both local taxes and economic value. In 2023 alone, it supported over 42,000 U.S. jobs while generating significant tax revenue.
