Florida extends enrollment period for panther ecosystem services pilot program

Due to the recent impacts of hurricanes Milton and Helene, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) has announced an extension for the application deadline of the Florida Panther Payment for Ecosystem Services Pilot Program. The new deadline is set for October 31, providing additional time for those affected by the storms to submit their applications.

Enrollment applications will be accepted until October 31. Landowners interested in participating can find more information or apply at MyFWC.com/PESpanther or reach out to program staff via email at PES@MyFWC.com.

The program is supported by a grant from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, with assistance from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and funding from the Fish & Wildlife Foundation of Florida. It aims to benefit private landowners and aid in panther conservation efforts by offering per-acre payments for maintaining habitat conditions that support panther conservation and landscape connectivity.

The objectives of this initiative are focused on enhancing Florida panther conservation on private lands, supporting landowners through partnerships, and contributing to ongoing efforts to connect landscapes crucial for expanding the Florida panther population.

Participants who enroll in the program will receive financial compensation along with professional resources that align with mutual habitat management goals. Enrollment is competitive, considering factors such as location, amount, quality of panther habitat provided, and available funding. Properties must be located within designated counties and meet specific size and habitat criteria to qualify. If a property's acreage meets basic eligibility and priority criteria, FWC staff will coordinate a site visit with landowners to conduct a habitat assessment. Landowners who agree to maintain or improve their enrolled area's quality for panthers will receive annual payments over three years, with opportunities for bonus payments.
