Florida seeks public input for proposed communism history museum

Today, Secretary of State Cord Byrd announced the launch of a public survey aimed at gathering input on the establishment of a museum dedicated to the history of communism. The survey will be available until November 1, 2024.

“Input from Floridians is needed to develop recommendations on the creation of a museum of the history of Communism,” stated Secretary Byrd. “I encourage all interested parties to take the time to complete and share the short online survey.”

The initiative follows legislation signed by Governor Ron DeSantis on April 17, 2024. The law, CS/CS/SB 1264 (Chapter 2024-102, Laws of Florida), mandates that the Department of State work with the Department of Education and other stakeholders to provide recommendations to the Legislature by December 1, 2024, regarding the museum's creation.

The Florida Department of State’s Division of Historical Resources is tasked with preserving and promoting Florida’s historical and archaeological resources. The Division manages a grants-in-aid program for historic preservation and coordinates outreach programs such as State Historical Markers. It collaborates with various agencies and organizations in its preservation efforts across Florida.
