Last month, Governor Ron DeSantis proclaimed September 28 as National Hunting and Fishing Day in Florida. This proclamation acknowledges the contributions of hunters and anglers to conservation efforts through license purchases and excise taxes on equipment.
Roger Young, Executive Director of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), stated, “Hunters and anglers are dedicated stewards of conservation, investing their time, resources and passion to protect and sustain the very habitats and species they cherish.” He emphasized that celebrating this day honors outdoor heritage traditions and highlights their role in wildlife conservation.
While the FWC celebrates hunting and fishing year-round, recent efforts have focused on public safety due to hurricanes Helene and Milton. As a result, acknowledgment of the proclamation was delayed. Some wildlife management areas remain closed due to storm impacts; visitors are advised to check MyFWC.com/Notices before visiting these areas.
The FWC expressed gratitude for Governor DeSantis’ recognition, inviting Floridians to explore diverse natural environments. Participating in these activities supports conservation for future generations.
The proclamation also highlighted Florida's commitment to environmental preservation. During Governor DeSantis' first term, $3.3 billion was invested in water resource protection, surpassing his goal by $800 million over four years. The fiscal year 2024-25 budget continues this momentum with an additional $1.6 billion investment.
National Hunting and Fishing Day was established in 1972 to recognize hunters' and anglers' contributions to fish and wildlife conservation along with social, cultural, economic, and ecological benefits from hunting and angling traditions.
Governor Ron DeSantis concluded by extending greetings to all observing National Hunting and Fishing Day on September 28 in Florida.
