Governor Ron DeSantis has announced a $9.5 million funding award to SeaPort Manatee to aid in its recovery from the damages inflicted by Hurricane Milton. SeaPort Manatee, a key deep-water seaport in Southwest Florida, plays an essential role in distributing goods such as fuel, fruits and vegetables, appliances, construction materials, and wood across Southwest Florida and the Southeast.
Hurricane Milton's impact led to potential losses of approximately $225 million at SeaPort Manatee. Although insurance covers many of these losses, some components remain uninsured. The hurricane caused significant damage including the destruction of 10 out of 13 on-site warehouses, three of the port's docking facilities, and widespread damage to port offices.
"This action to get SeaPort Manatee back to full operations will benefit the people of Florida," stated Governor Ron DeSantis. "Taking action to address these impacts now is imperative to keep Florida on the road to recovery."
In response, several state agencies have been directed by Governor DeSantis to assist with recovery efforts at the port. The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) will provide experts and skilled workers; the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) will expedite permits for rebuilding infrastructure; and the Florida Division of Emergency Management (FDEM) will aid in navigating FEMA's award process. Additionally, the Florida National Guard will contribute personnel for perimeter security and fence repairs.
"With the major impact that seaports have on our state’s economy... it’s critical that we ensure our seaports are open and fully operational," said FDOT Secretary Jared W. Perdue, P.E., acknowledging Governor DeSantis' initiative alongside state agency partners.
The economic importance of SeaPort Manatee is underscored by its contributions in 2023 when it supported 42,094 U.S. jobs, generated $275 million in taxes at state and local levels, and added $7.3 billion in economic value nationwide.
