Florida legislators have allocated $23 million to JAXPORT for the purchase and refurbishment of container cranes. This funding will enable the acquisition of a new crane from Liebherr Crane Company in Germany and refurbish existing equipment at JAXPORT's terminals.
The financial support was approved by Governor Ron DeSantis after being appropriated by the Florida Legislature during its recent session. The upgrades aim to enhance cargo handling efficiency, contributing to job creation and supply chain security within the region and state.
Paul Renner, Speaker of the Florida House, expressed his pride in presenting this investment, emphasizing its importance in maintaining Florida’s competitiveness as a global gateway. "This $23 million will secure a new container crane and make critical updates to existing ones," he stated.
Senate President Kathleen Passidomo highlighted Jacksonville's strategic role in facilitating commerce throughout Florida and beyond. She noted that the funding was advocated for by Senator Yarborough and would benefit both local and statewide economies.
State Senator Clay Yarborough emphasized the critical nature of container cranes for port infrastructure, stating that they ensure efficient cargo flow vital for economic strength. Representative Kimberly Daniels echoed these sentiments, stressing JAXPORT's significance as Florida’s largest container port.
Over two years, JAXPORT has received $53 million from the legislature to support its crane fleet upgrades. Two cranes are already on order with an expected arrival in spring 2025, while this new funding allows for procuring a third crane due in fall 2025.
JAXPORT CEO Eric Green thanked state leaders for their ongoing support. He underscored the necessity of modernizing the crane fleet to maintain efficiencies amid population growth while expanding cargo volumes and related employment opportunities.
The appropriation request had backing from State Senator Clay Yarborough, State Representative Kimberly Daniels, and the entire Duval Legislative Delegation. JAXPORT plays a crucial role in supporting 207,000 jobs with an annual economic impact of $33 billion across the region and state.
