Governor Ron DeSantis has announced a $1 million investment from the Florida Disaster Fund to aid in rebuilding fishing and aquaculture infrastructure damaged by Hurricanes Helene and Milton. The funding will support repairs to boat slips, docks, fish houses, and aquaculture businesses in Florida's Big Bend region.
"The Big Bend’s fishing industry took a direct hit from hurricanes Debby and Helene, and so did the hardworking Floridians who make their living on the water," stated Governor DeSantis. "Today’s investments will help to rebuild critical waterside infrastructure and help get Floridians in the fishing and aquaculture industries back to full operations."
In addition, Governor DeSantis is seeking federal assistance through a fisheries disaster declaration request submitted to the U.S. Secretary of Commerce. This move aims to unlock federal funds for rebuilding offshore, nearshore, and inshore fisheries.
The governor has also instructed the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) to expedite permits or approvals needed for reconstruction efforts on both uplands and water-based structures.
"Governor DeSantis has a proven track record of helping communities recover quickly and rebuild fully after storms," said Roger Young, Executive Director of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. "We are grateful for his leadership and support in assisting the fishing industry as it recovers from hurricanes Debby, Helene, and Milton."
To further support the industry, discounts on fishing licenses have been introduced. These include half-off short-term licenses for Floridians between October 25, 2024, and January 3, 2025. There is also a 50% discount on lifetime sportsman licenses for children up to age 17.
Florida plays a significant role in saltwater fishing nationally with an economic impact of $9.2 billion annually. The announcement aims to assist residents in recovering lost income while restoring vital business infrastructure.
