Florida reduces commercial rent tax to 2% starting June

The National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) has expressed strong support for recent legislation aimed at reducing the sales tax on commercial leases in Florida. The state sales tax rate for commercial rentals has been lowered from 4.5% to 2%, effective June 1, 2024. This reduction does not include local discretionary sales surtax that may be imposed by certain counties.

The NFIB is advocating for the complete elimination of this tax when lawmakers reconvene in Tallahassee in January. "No other state makes businesses pay a tax on their monthly rent!" states the NFIB, emphasizing the unique burden this tax places on Florida businesses.

The organization encourages business owners to actively participate in advocacy efforts, noting that personalized messages from business owners can significantly influence legislative decisions.

For more insights and information on this issue, NFIB members and interested parties are invited to read a column by NFIB State Executive Director Bill Herrle, which discusses the importance of repealing the rent tax.

NFIB continues its mission as a member-driven organization supporting small and independent businesses across the nation.
