Florida launches student contests for Native American Heritage Month

The Florida Department of Education and Volunteer Florida are inviting students to take part in the 2024 Native American Heritage Month art and essay contests. The theme for this year is “Honoring Native American Contributions to Florida’s Success.” Celebrated in November, Native American Heritage Month acknowledges the impact of Native Americans in the United States.

“Florida has a rich history that celebrates Native Americans and we are proud to provide students with opportunities to learn about the many Native American Floridians who contributed to our state’s success,” stated Commissioner of Education Manny Diaz, Jr. He emphasized the visible influence of Native American culture throughout Florida.

Volunteer Florida CEO Josie Tamayo expressed pride in recognizing the contributions of Native Americans, stating, "I am honored to recognize the rich culture and heritage of Native Americans, whose contributions greatly enhance the fabric of our nation."

Students from Kindergarten through third grade can participate in an art contest, while those from grades four through twelve can enter an essay contest. There is also a nomination process for full-time educators for the Excellence in Education Award.

For the art contest, participants will submit original two-dimensional artwork reflecting this year's theme. Four winners will receive a $100 gift card for school supplies and a one-year pass to Florida State Parks.

The essay contest is open to all students attending any Florida school in grades 4-12. Six winners will be chosen: two each from elementary (grades 4-5), middle (grades 6-8), and high school (grades 9-12). Winners will be awarded a two-year Florida College Plan scholarship provided by the Florida Prepaid College Foundation and a $100 gift card for school supplies.

Contestants must reside in Florida, attend school within specified grades, and provide a Social Security Number. Each student may submit only one essay no longer than 500 words on a Floridian Native American's impactful story.

Governor Ron DeSantis and First Lady Casey DeSantis’ award for educators is open to full-time teachers at various levels across Florida schools. Nominations can be made by principals, teachers, parents/guardians, or students. Award recipients will receive $2,500 from Volunteer Florida.

Entries must reach Volunteer Florida by 5:00 pm Eastern Time on Tuesday, November 12, 2024. More details are available at www.floridanativeamericanheritage.com.
