Port Everglades introduces new Super Post-Panamax cranes to boost efficiency

Port Everglades has introduced three new Super Post-Panamax container gantry cranes. The addition aims to enhance the port's efficiency, already ranked in the top 25 percent globally by the World Bank’s Container Port Performance Index.

The cranes stand at 175 feet high and are designed to handle more cargo. They can move containers stacked eight high and reach across 22 containers on a ship's deck. This is an improvement over the existing seven Post-Panamax cranes, which are 151 feet high and can only manage containers stacked six high and reaching across 16 containers.

With these additions, Port Everglades now operates a total of 13 container gantry cranes—six Super Post-Panamax and seven Post Panamax—along with one mobile harbor crane.

Glenn Wiltshire, Acting Director of Port Everglades, remarked on the progress: “With the commissioning of the new cranes, our historic $471 million project for the Southport Turning Notch Extension is nearly complete.” He added that the event was also about recognizing long-term investments in infrastructure by Broward County Commissioners that benefit both workers and the regional economy.

The ceremony saw attendance from Broward County government representatives, terminal operators, cargo labor force members, maritime groups, and business advocacy organizations. A moment of reflection honored those affected by a recent bridge collapse at the Port of Baltimore.
