Former U.S. Congressman Andrew P. Ireland, who also served as a Winter Haven City Commissioner, passed away on October 20, 2024, at the age of 94. Ireland's public service career began with his election to the Winter Haven City Commission from 1966 to 1968. He later advanced to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1976 and served until his retirement in 1992.
Ireland is survived by his wife Nancy, to whom he was married for forty-three years, along with their five children, seven grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. His commitment to serving his country and improving the lives of his constituents marked his long career.
Governor Ron DeSantis has directed that flags be flown at half-staff in honor of Ireland's memory. The flags of the United States and the State of Florida will be lowered at three locations: Polk County Courthouse in Winter Haven, Florida; City Hall of Winter Haven, Florida; and the State Capitol in Tallahassee, Florida. This tribute will take place from sunrise to sunset on Saturday, November 16, 2024.
