Florida TaxWatch has released the third commentary in its five-part series examining social determinants of health, with a focus on neighborhood and built environment factors. This analysis looks into how environmental conditions, including age and economic background, influence individual health as defined by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
Dominic M. Calabro, President and CEO of Florida TaxWatch, highlighted the importance of upbringing on physical and mental health. "A person’s upbringing plays a crucial role in shaping their physical and mental health, influencing it both in a negative and in a positive sense, and access to a quality home and essential resources significantly impacts one’s overall wellbeing," he stated. Calabro emphasized that strategic investments in community resources could lead to substantial health improvements.
The commentary notes that poor housing quality increases the risk of chronic illnesses due to overcrowding and shared spaces, which affect physical and mental health. Vulnerable groups like children and the elderly are particularly susceptible.
Safe neighborhoods contribute to better lifelong physical and mental health. The absence of safe recreational areas limits opportunities for physical activity, affecting overall health outcomes. Access to healthcare, food, and transportation is also vital for maintaining well-being. Delayed treatment due to inadequate healthcare access can worsen health outcomes.
Access to healthy foods is linked to reduced risks of diet-related diseases such as obesity and diabetes. Food deserts in low-income areas correlate with higher rates of these conditions. Environmental factors like poor ventilation and contaminated water can lead to serious health issues such as respiratory conditions.
Climate change effects pose additional risks through extreme weather events that damage homes and displace communities.
