Governor Ron DeSantis has announced the allocation of 300 new bonuses to law enforcement officers in Florida, bringing the total number of bonuses awarded through the Florida Law Enforcement Recruitment Bonus Payment Program to 6,400. These latest bonuses were given to officers serving in counties affected by Hurricanes Debby, Helene, and Milton. The program, initiated in 2022, offers a one-time $5,000 bonus after taxes to newly employed officers.
"Florida welcomes law enforcement officers from across the country to a state where they will be recognized and appreciated," said Governor Ron DeSantis. He added that the state celebrates the law enforcement profession and encourages people to join. "Law enforcement officers make enormous personal sacrifices for the communities they serve, and they deserve higher pay and more support."
Since its inception, over 1,560 officers from 49 states and two territories have moved to Florida under this initiative. Notably, more than 470 recruits have come from states perceived as anti-police such as California, Illinois, and New York. The program has distributed over $43.3 million so far.
Florida Secretary of Commerce J. Alex Kelly praised the initiative saying, "Under Governor DeSantis’ leadership, Florida shows the nation how to support law enforcement." He emphasized that the program highlights Florida's commitment to rewarding law enforcement officers for their service.
Besides financial incentives like a $5,000 recruitment bonus, becoming a law enforcement officer in Florida also offers benefits such as financial stability, upward mobility opportunities, excellent health and retirement benefits, student loan forgiveness programs, home loan programs among others.
