FloridaCommerce has reported an increase in private sector employment in the Orlando area, with 6,600 jobs added over the year in October 2024. The construction industry led this growth with 4,200 new jobs, followed by education and health services which saw an increase of 3,500 jobs.
The unemployment rate in Orlando rose to 3.5% in October 2024 from 3.2% a year earlier. Additionally, the labor force decreased by 1.3%, equating to a loss of 19,900 individuals since October 2023.
Statewide, Florida's unemployment rate remains below the national average for four consecutive years at 3.3%. In October alone, Florida added 107,600 private sector jobs.
Several resources are available for job seekers in Florida. These include Employ Florida for job connections and training; CareerSource Florida's career centers offering counseling and job placement support; Apprentice Florida promoting apprenticeship programs; and Veterans Florida assisting military veterans with civilian employment transitions.
The Military Family Employment Advocacy Program provides workforce services to military families through local career centers across the state.
FloridaCommerce reports more than 380,000 jobs are available online for Floridians seeking employment. The CareerSource Florida network offers free services such as resume writing and interview skills enhancement to improve employability.
Additionally, FloridaCommerce announced over $52 million approved through the Small Business Emergency Bridge Loan Program for businesses affected by Hurricanes Debby, Helene, and Milton since August. This program provides zero-interest loans to small businesses impacted by Hurricane Milton until December 4, 2024.
Other hurricane recovery resources include the Business Damage Assessment Survey for reporting damage from Hurricane Milton and Disaster Unemployment Assistance for those whose employment was affected by Hurricanes Helene and Milton.
